I left Brownsville, Texas shortly after my best friend Phoebe ran away. She was seventeen but I was eighteen and got out of there though at first I hadn't been hiding from anyone. I'd just taken an opportunity to work outside of Texas. The X's had been somewhat of a family to me, they'd helped me when I didn't have a real family just like they'd helped everyone else that was young and stupid.
That's what we had all been, young and stupid and even though they did help us they did it for them not for us. It took over ten years for me to understand this. I'd been involved with this gang for a long time, and unlike most of the other females, they actually respected me as much as those bikers could.
In the back of my mind, I knew it was because I was under my long time friend Landon's protection so they knew I was off limits. I had always also pulled my own weight and did my job, no questions asked. Looking at me you wouldn't think I could break an arm easily or sneak into high secured buildings but I had training from The X's and then some.
Once upon a time I tried to have a normal life, even had a normal job like working for the FBI which wasn't easy but having a sparkling clean record had always helped me. Not to mention, I aced the shit out of the SAT's and most of the tests I'd ever taken. I had a pretty good photographic memory which had come in handy with everything I'd ever excelled at. I wasn't sure if I'd been able to do half the things I'd done if I didn't have a photographic memory.
My normal life hadn't lasted long however, I tried hard to be good and stay away from trouble but it seemed like it followed me anywhere I went. Boyfriends were pretty much non-existent now and honestly, it was better that way. No one needed to be a part of my crazy ass life, not that anyone would willingly sign up for it. That's how my real last relationship ended, this man I thought I loved and almost married back when I had a normal life – he found out about my past and he found out about my writing, let's just say he wasn't a fan of either. So that ended and at that point I decided that I couldn't pretend being someone I wasn't.
I'd never fit in with the normal crowd either. As I walked past the people gathered in the lobby of the hotel, I wondered how many of these authors, models, bloggers, photographers and readers I was friends with on Facebook. I'd liked, commented and supported some of the fellow authors. Hell, I'd even tried starting conversations in the past with some of them. But it was just like with every other crowd I had ever been around, the bottom line was that I was different. Sometimes I thought something was seriously wrong with me, because people tended to turn away from me or talk over me - when I was Victoria.
It wasn't that they didn't respect me per say, they just didn’t notice me. I strolled past the group of people who gave me odd looks but otherwise didn't smile or wave. I had a burgundy wig on, and wore black pleather leggings, with a lacy black crop top, a brown leather vest over it and long black combat boots. I smirked to myself as I made it to the elevator with my backpack on my side. It was funny watching people's reactions to my outfits because they probably thought I was some kind of weirdo.
I guess you could say in a way, I was since I was a loner most of the time. Even though steampunk was something that had become popular in the recent years but I liked to think I had always had a unique sense of style and now I could put a name to it. I'd always liked that vintage look with a twist of sassiness. Just by looking at my outfit you could tell what type of personality I had.
Finally I made it to my room and set my backpack on the bed as I removed my clothes and wig and as biker slash steampunk chick Tocxy was put away for now, Victoria was back. My birth name was Victoria Zylander, but The X's decided to shorten my name to Tocxy because they thought Victoria Vicky or Tori were all too girly for me. So they came up with this nickname, a combination of both my first and last name or something and it had stuck through the years and that's what I was known by. So when I discovered my passion for writing dark romance novels, I decided to use my real name instead. No one knew me by that name, and no one ever saw me with my natural hair and in "normal" clothing.
One day when I ended up publishing my first novel, I hadn't thought of a pen name or what I was going to do at these book signing events I was planning to attend to. I took the idea from the book that I wrote, the story being inspired by my life anyway, I decided that I could rock two images just be like the character in my book. I took a black silver dress out of the bag that it had been in since I bought it. It was pretty and the total opposite of biker chick or steampunk.
The dress was flowy and it came down to my knees. It had some embroidery on the waist and it was long sleeved and see through but you couldn't really see all the tattoos on my left arm. To me the dress was very chic and classy, which I was not but I still liked. So I put it on and blow dried my long sandy hair, letting it fall in waves around me. I put on some strappy silver heels and looked at myself in the mirror.
This girl is Victoria, someone that would never see herself on a bike or wearing what I'd just been wearing not long ago. Even though I looked so normal right now, I knew I'd still be the weird author with a table all to herself. Not even assistant. I sighed and grabbed my two suitcases before I headed downstairs.
